The suction of my Philips Avent Electric Breast Pump is low.

Published on 13 October 2023

The Philips Avent Electric Breast Pump offers a wide range of expression and simulation levels. If the suction does not feel right or comfortable for you, please try a different level.
If the suction is still too low after trying to increase the level, try our easy tips and tricks below.

Make sure that the breast pump has been cleaned. Also, assembling the breast pump while it is still a bit wet after disinfecting can help to improve the vacuum.

If not correctly assembled or if any of the parts are damaged, the breast pump can leak air, reducing the suction power.

  1. Check that the white valve is not damaged. Insert the white valve into the pump body so that it fits securely into the small round hole. Make sure that the pointed side of the valve is facing down and is closed.
  2. Check that the silicone diaphragm is not damaged. Fit the clear silicone diaphragm into the pump body. Ensure a perfect seal around the rim by pressing down with your fingers. You may find it easier to assemble if the diaphragm is wet.
  3. Screw the pump body onto the feeding bottle or storage cup until securely in place.
  4. Check that the cushion is not damaged. Securely attach the cushion to the pump body. Make sure that the inner part of the cushion is pressed all the way up to the line (indicated with an arrow). Secure the rim around the funnel, making sure there are no gaps. You may find it easier to assemble if the cushion is wet.
  5. Check that the tube(s) is(are) not damaged and properly connected to the expression kit and the motor unit.

Make sure that the pump is positioned correctly on the breast to allow a seal between the breast pump cushion and your breast.

Do not mix parts of other breast pumps that do not belong to the Philips Avent breast pump range.

Should you still experience low or no suction, we recommend replacing the affected parts, which are available at https://www.philips.com/support, or contacting our Consumer Care team for further assistance.
